Default Cooking artichokes?

When boiling artichokes, should:

~the water be covering the artichoke, or only about halfway?
~I keep the lid on the pot or should it remain open?

Thanks!!

Put them "butt down" in a steamer in a bigger pot with 1-1 and 1/2 inches of water and cover them when they are simmering ,once they have boiled.

Lid on - a plate to weigh them done so they don't float.

I add lots of garlic, lemon, bay leave, salt and peppercorns to flavor the water - be sure to cook in a non-reactive pan like stainless steel - this is very important with artichokes.

They can also be steamed.
